2008 Fan Club Meeting Information and Programming Links

January 24, we learned what foods to eat to help fight cancer and heart disease at Keep Kids Healthy.

January 30: workout/exercise, and make sure you hydrate (drink fluids,) but choose your water bottles carefully.
Read the "Hazards of Hydration" article here. (Certain plastics can cause health problems.)
Also, here's an article on Pesticides in Produce. Eat organic if you can,
and learn what produce (fruits and veggies) have the lowest amounts of pesticides when you eat
regular produce. I have a chart here in the library I can print out for you, too,
from study results that the Environmental Working Group published.

February 6, (Heart Health Month!!!!) we had handouts on eating the way we need to as Native people.
Keep your heart healthy! Wisdom Keepers for Healthy Hearts
And we found a great cookbook with lots of nutrition advice, food safety, serving portion information
and more at A River of Recipes Cookbook. (Save this one on your hard drive, it's a great resource!
I also printed out a copy and added it to the FAN Club binder.)

February 13, we'll look at the Food Pyramid and some other great activity pages (from the ADA) for
National Children's Dental Health Month--although all of us, of all ages, need to practice good dental health care!
Also, eat lowfat popcorn! We learned that at Keep Kids Healthy!

For the rest of February, we learned the importance of dental health, as part of National Children's Dental Health Month!

March is National Nutrition Month! There are some great handouts and activities here, about learning to eat right!

April is a time to work on your mental fitness. Try the activities here to be "Smarter by September!"
It is also Alcohol Awareness Month. Check out the links I found from NACDD. Here are some facts about youth, alcohol, and drugs.
Be safe, guys, don't use this stuff. It's not good for you, or your families.
Speaking of being safe, the end of April and the beginning of May is Safe Kids Week!

May is also Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month! Allergies and Asthma are something I'm aware of, how about you?

June is the start of our summer reading program! We'll play Wii to stay active indoors!

July is a great time to learn about Food Safety!
You can even watch videos about Food Safety
(and now in American Sign Language, too!) from the Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Sorry about August, I kind of got caught up in finishing the Summer Reading Program--hope
you were out enjoying the nice weather in a healthful way!

September is Recovery Month! Be your best and biggest fan and celebrate your recovery from addictions,
or inspire someone to recover, or celebrate with us and become inspired to recover from an alcohol or drug addiction.

October: What's in candy?

November: Healthy Holiday Eating
Food of the Month from Health Castle: Squash! One of the Three Sisters!

2007 Fan Club Meeting Information and Programming Links

This "worksheet" is what we did at our meeting on January 31, 2007.
(Many of our worksheets and handouts are kept in a binder by Kymberley's desk.
She'll copy them or print them off the Internet for free anytime you ask!)

For February and the first of March, we either had informal short meetings,
or cancelled due to trainings and illness.

March 14, we learned about the benefits of stretching,
but also why it is not always necessary to stretch, it's more important to
exercise in a balanced way for both sides of your body. We learned this from fitness tips
sent to us by the Oneida Family Fitness Center as part of their Active for Life program.

March 21, we played Wii Sports® at the library with our new Nintendo Wii©2007 system, engaging
in such fitness activities as boxing, tennis, and more with our Wario Ware: Smooth Moves game.©2007, Nintendo.

March 28, we got copies of MyPyramid or MyPyramid for Kids and
talked about eating healthy and avoiding diabetes. April 4 meeting was cancelled due to illness.

April 11, we played more Wii(©Nintendo, 2007) and got moving!!

April 18 & 25, Kymberley cancelled because she was writing a grant.
May 2, Kymberley was at the WAPL Conference. She gave a presentation to librarians
around the state about the Seussabration, and how we like to serve healthy foods @our library!

May 9, Kymberley gave us "What is a Gram?" handouts from the web page of Wichita State University.

May 16, we learned more about exercise: it's one of three things: endurance, strength, or flexibility.

May 23, Kymberley was getting ready for a training, and we didn't meet.

May 30, we tried to play the Wii, but the batteries were dead in the controllers,
so we went outside & exercised instead.

June 6, we ate healthy snacks and talked about whether or not we should spend our summer
in front of the computers in the library or go out and exercise--I won't tell you what the
majority response was, I'll just tell you we eventually came to the exercise/play outside conclusion...

June 13, we talked about NOT dieting, What's the Deal with Diets? and what we need to do is eat healthy;
developing healthy habits this summer. Kymberley got our handouts from Kids Health.

June 20, we learned about the healthy reasons to get enough sleep.
Our handout was entitled, "How Much Sleep Do I Need?" from Kids Health.

For the rest of the summer, we played Wii for fitness, so we weren't sitting in front of the computers all summer!

Once school started, we've had a few FAN Clubs with handouts, went over the "What is a Gram?" information again,
because Kymberley overheard us talking about junk food, and more.

In October, w e learned about the nutritional value of POPCORN,
a traditional food for us and one we can get almost every day at the library!

We also gathered information about Food Exchanges from the American Dietetic Association (Eat Right!)
