Fall 1984--Needs Assessment survey conducted for considering a public library in the Village of Suring. 91% of respondents favored a library. March 1985--Steering Committee formed and met with a representative of the Nicolet Federated Library System. Process for establishing a legal public library formulated.
April-June 1985--Steering Committee studies state library laws, county board funding and grants, housing, affiliation with state library system, and formation of a Friends of the Library support group. Consultation with community members and municipality officials.
Summer 1985--Initial presentations made to the municipal boards of Armstrong, Bagley, Breed, How, Maple Valley and the Village of Suring.
October 1985--Oconto County Board formally contacted to consider funding the establishment of a public library in Suring.
November 1985--Steering Committee reorganizes as Friends of the Suring Area Public Library.
February 1986--First meeting of the Friends of the Suring Area Public Library held. Goal is to find monetary support for a public library and create public interest. By-laws and plans for an interim library board drawn up.
May 1986--Application for membership in the Nicolet Federated Library System. Interim Board of the Suring Area Public Library meets. Board officers and village and township representatives elected.
June 1986--Financial support pledged by Bagley, Breed, How and the Village of Suring.
August 1986--Confirmation of membership in the Nicolet Federated Library System received, effective January 1987.
October 1986--Oconto County Library Board approves establishment of the Suring Area Public Library.
November 1986--Present building on the corner of Main Street and Peshtigo Brook Road rented.
November 1986-January 1987--Library shelves built, library supplies and furniture procured, books donated, monies solicited from area clubs, citizens, municipal boards. Books catalogued and arranged.
January 27, 1987--Library opens for business.
July 27, 1999--Library begins automated circulation as a member of OWLSnet.
