We are in an emergency, a worldwide emergency, and the recommend course of action for most of us to stay put, to be still. That seems counterintuitive given our understanding of the word “emergency," but if we consider its original meaning, emergere in Latin, or “to bring to light,” we find another possible meaning for this time: emergence. With this new understanding, being still may make more sense. In this talk, we will learn ways to be still, discuss why it is so hard, and reflect on what COVID-19 may be bringing to light in larger society and also in our own lives.

Beck Tench is a wife, daughter, friend, teacher, gardener, cyclist, kind stranger, and PhD student at the University of Washington Information School. She studies how to restore and have greater agency over our attention in a culture driven to distraction by the attention economy. She helps libraries become one of those rare places where we slow down and notice the world, our inner life, and each other.
This webinar will be recorded and captioned and available to watch afterward.
