Subscribe to Newsletters from NFLS By Shannon Nichola Stoner, Gillett Public Library Director Gillett youth and their parents celebrated the annual eclipse, which occurred on Saturday, October 14th, with a Solar Eclipse Party at the Gillett Public Library on Wednesday, October 11th.
Kids learned the science of the upcoming eclipse including how and why they occur. They also created their own special memento for the event using chalk circles and black construction paper. Using a large Styrofoam plate and a small disk, they explored how it appears that the moon can cover the sun. The group then enjoyed sundaes with a special decoration. Wisconsin's four tribal public libraries came together for the second annual Tribal Public Library Conference in May. Sponsored by NFLS through an LSTA Professional Learning grant, this year's event was held at the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe University Community Library, located on the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe reservation near Hayward, Wisconsin.
Along with the Lac Courte Oreilles, Lac du Flambeau, Menominee and Oneida library staff also attended the two-day conference. Professional development sessions were offered regarding library policies, operational processes, employee onboarding and succession planning. The group was also joined by Jennifer Himmelreich, Senior Program Officer at the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Himmelreich manages the Native American Library Services Grants, which provide funding to Native American libraries across the country to help support operations or special projects. She was able to provide an overview of the grant programs and valuable tips on managing the awards. In addition to the educational components, the library directors also had time to get to know each other and share their experiences and challenges unique to their positions as tribal public librarians. Hosting the conference at each tribal library also gives them a chance to observe each library and visit their unique cultural spaces. The Marinette County Consolidated Public Library Service commemorated the 120th anniversary of the Stephenson Public Library building on Friday, September 29, 2023, with an Open House featuring a staff-created Story Stroll outside the library and a self-guided tour brochure inside the building. Cookies were available all day and the Marinette County Historical Society President-Elect, Joan Pace, stopped by with flowers to celebrate the day. We would like to welcome Nancy Bell as the new library director of the Shawano County Library. After graduating with a Biological Sciences degree, Nancy fell in love with library service while working part-time as a page at her hometown library in Illinois. Since then, she has had many different positions in libraries: circulation clerk, circulation assistant, reference assistant, readers’ advisory librarian, and director. While Nancy loves reading (of course), she is a tabletop board game enthusiast, escape room artist, and road tripper. She also plans to visit all the national parks and has visited 12 (out of 63) so far. Welcome to the NFLS libraries team, Nancy!
