The Wisconsin Youth Services Showcase has a new online submission form. The form has proven easy to use and recent submissions populate the May showcase. Submissions can be uploaded online at: https://forms.dpi.wi.gov/se/56301B2D579813FC.
To submit multiple items, refresh your browser and click on the submission link again.

A Sampling of Showcase Items

Check out this month's edition of the Showcase to find examples:

  • A spring-themed drop-in activity
  • A Seuss celebration
  • An animated storytime prop, and
  • A teen/tween writing program.
View this month's Showcase here: http://pld.dpi.wi.gov/pld_showcase.

Anyone is welcome to submit content and ideas for the Showcase; e.g., librarians, library directors, proud parents, supportive colleagues, etc. Only contributions featuring Wisconsin youth services and Wisconsin public libraries will be featured on the Showcase. Collaborative projects can be submitted; however, the Showcase will focus on the public library connection; e.g., a photo of a library book talk at a 4-H meeting will emphasize public library outreach.

The email below was sent by Tessa Schmidt. As an FYI, I did send the PSA to our five local stations: WLUK, WBAY, WFRV, CW 14 and NBC26.  Be on the look out for it !

The Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) has once again produced several high-quality public service announcements (PSA) for Summer 2016. The English and Spanish PSAs are available for download and customization by your library, or simply as links to cut and paste and use with social media.

All Wisconsin public libraries are considered members of CSLP through the contract paid for by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.  You must establish a “members only” login on the CSLP website to gain access to proprietary downloads: http://www.cslpreads.org/. New member access is typically granted in 24-48 hours. To register for the first time, click here: http://www.cslpreads.org/wp-login.php?action=register

I hope you enjoy these great materials!

Rethinking Summer Programs
Read YALSA’s latest position paper “Adopting a Summer Learning Approach for Increased Impact” for a rationale for why libraries need to rethink their traditional summer reading programming in order to better meet the serious needs and diverse interests of today’s youth, especially underserved audiences. The paper also includes recommended strategies libraries can take transform their summer programming, as well as a list of selected resources.  Access this free resource at:  www.ala.org/yalsa/adopting-summer-learning-approach-increased-impact-yalsa-position-paper

College & Career Prep in Small, Rural & Tribal Libraries
YALSA was awarded $305,000 by IMLS to implement a 3 year project to work with staff at small, rural and tribal libraries to plan and implement college and career readiness services for the middle schoolers in their communities.   YALSA will partner with the Association of Rural and Small libraries to provide continuing education and other support to library staff.  Learn more at www.ala.org/yalsa/future-ready-library

2016 Teen Read Week™ Resources
The 2016 TRW site launched during National Library Week, and has everything you need to plan a great literacies event.  This year TRW is being celebrated Oct. 9 – 15 with a multilingual “Read for the Fun of it Theme.”  Access the free planning resources, sign up for a free webinar, and order your official TRW products at www.ala.org/teenread.

Summer Titles for Teens
The 2016 Teens’ Top Ten nominees were announced the week of April 11th for National Library Week.  Libraries can encourage teens to read these titles from now throughout the summer, and then vote for their favorites online beginning in Aug.  To download a free Teens’ Top Ten Toolkit, visit www.ala.org/yalsa/teenstopten.
