Subscribe to Newsletters from NFLS S. Verna Fowler Academic Library/ Menominee Public Library grant purchase focuses on teen engagement7/11/2023 The S. Verna Fowler Academic Library/ Menominee Public Library purchased several items for a teen engagement project with the help of a Library Improvement and Innovation Grant from the Nicolet Federated Library System.
The library purchased a Nintendo Switch, games, and accessories, and launched a Tiny Art Show. The Switch was bought with the goal of engaging tweens and teens with video games in the Library during a game night or in conjunction with other programs. Interim Library Director Bethany Huse said "We had patrons play on the new Nintendo Switch and did not want to leave at the end of the program." Since the initial Tiny Art Show, the library has released more sets of art kits periodically with themes for each one. The library had some returns to create a tiny art show and patrons have come in right away each time it makes more kits. Huse said the library had all the kits taken within a week of putting them out, with patrons repeatedly asking about the next installment. The Gillett Public Library recently purchased items for its new Makerspace table with the help of a Library Improvement and Innovation Grant from the Nicolet Federated Library System. The library purchased magnetic tile kits, origami paper, a sketchpad, and a laptop for STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programming. There was a noted increase in the time patrons spent in the library. Parents also played with their kids using the makerspace.
