Beware: Facebook Scams (from Joan Stewart's Publicity Hound e-zine)

9/26/2016

Two Facebook scams are back.

If you're drooling over that iPhone 7 and hoping to win one on a Facebook iPhone giveaway page, beware.

Many of those pages are "like-farming" scams. Someone creates a fake page and tries to collect as many likes as possible quickly. Once the page accumulates about a half million likes, the scammer can sell it to a shady marketer who wants an already-established Facebook page to promote any sleazy product or service to you.

Sometimes these scams are easy to spot, sometimes not. Kim Komando, aka "America's Digital Goddess," has captured screenshots of real and fake iPhone giveaway offers. See if you can spot the fakes. Go to "Facebook scam! Don't click "Like" again until you've read this."

In Scam Number 2, beware of free "federal grants" that your friends or family members tell you about on Facebook. (Read article...)

These 500 Million Hacked Yahoo Accounts Are A Phishing Paradise from KnowBe4

9/23/2016

 Stu Sjouwerman

"Yahoo announced that 500 million of their accounts were hacked and are sold by internet criminals. Bad guys are going to use this information in a variety of ways. For instance, they will send phishing emails claiming you need to change your Yahoo account, looking just like the real ones.   Here is what I suggest you do right away:
  • Open your browser and go to Yahoo. Do not use a link in any email. Reset your password and make it a strong, complex password or rather a pass-phrase.
  • If you were using that same password on multiple websites, you need to stop that right now. Using the same password all over the place is an invitation to get hacked. If you did use your Yahoo passwords on other sites, go to those sites and change the password there too. Also change the security questions and make the answer something non-obvious.
  • Use a free password manager that can generate hard-to-hack passwords, keep and remember them for you.
  • Watch out for any phishing emails that relate to Yahoo in any way and ask for information.
  • Now would also be a good time to use Yahoo Account Key, a simple authentication tool that eliminates the need to use a password altogether.

It's all over the press. Here is a quote from Reuters: "Yahoo Inc said on Thursday information associated with at least 500 million user accounts was stolen from its network in 2014 by what it believed was a "state-sponsored actor."

The data stolen may have included names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and hashed passwords (the vast majority with the relatively strong bcrypt algorithm) but may not have included unprotected passwords, payment card data or bank account information, the company said. OverDrive Terminating Partnership with Barnes & Noble

9/1/2016

This is the latest from WiLS about OverDrive no longer offering Barnes & Noble periodicals, including a message to offer patrons:

Last month we shared that OverDrive announced they are terminating their partnership with Barnes & Noble for OverDrive Periodicals. The WPLC's current subscriptions will be available to patrons until the end of the subscription term in October, and following that, all periodicals will be removed from Wisconsin's Digital Library.

As promised, below is messaging for you to use to notify patrons of this change.
----
Message to Patrons (for email, newsletters, social media, print signage, etc.)
We regret to announce that, effective October 1st, magazines will no longer be available in Wisconsin's Digital Library.

In July, OverDrive terminated its partnership with Barnes and Noble, which provides NOOK Periodicals for Wisconsin's Digital Library.  The WPLC, the managing body for Wisconsin's Digital Library, is exploring other potential digital magazine products to replace this valuable statewide service to library users.  You may still have access to other digital magazines through another service; contact your local library to find out or visit them in person to read your favorite magazines in print.

We appreciate your patronage of Wisconsin's Digital Library, and we are very sorry for this inconvenience.
