Closed Captioning Library YouTube Videos (WCLS)

During the COVID-19 stay home orders, Whatcom County Library System kept staff whose library work couldn't be done from home busy by having them work from home to close caption the many videos on the WCLS YouTube channel. Getting this closed captioning done to make the videos accessible to more patrons had been on the system's to-do list for a long time, but they hadn't had the staffing to take up the project. It was a great way to keep staff busy from home during the closure, and they are proud of the fact that (almost) all of the videos they are creating about library services are now accessible to those who are hard of hearing. (They are still working through some of the backlog.)

If you still have library staff who can't return to their normal schedules 100%, this might be a good project for them to take up.

COVID-19-related Cybercrime: Microsoft Takes Legal Action

According to a recent blog post by Microsoft, cybercriminals have been "taking advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic in an attempt to defraud customers in 62 countries around the world. Our civil case has resulted in a court order allowing Microsoft to seize control of key domains in the criminals’ infrastructure so that it can no longer be used to execute cyberattacks."

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is now accepting FY 2021 proposals for National Leadership Grants for Libraries (NLG-L) and the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian program (LB21). 

Applicants have through October 2, 2020, to submit their two-page preliminary proposals.

Libraries Connecting You to Coverage: Mini-grant application period is July 1-17, 2020

Apply Now to Become a Certified Application Counselor Designated Organization for the Affordable Care Act

The Public Library Association, in partnership with Community Catalyst and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, are working together to inform communities about the open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act for 2021. Applications are now being accepted to offer financial and staff support for public libraries to become Certified Application Counselor Designated Organizations (CDOs) for the 2021 open enrollment period of the Affordable Care Act.
  • Up to 30 public libraries in states that utilize the Federally Facilitated Marketplace (FFM)* at healthcare.gov will receive $1,000 to support their organization in becoming a Certified Application Counselor Designated Organization (CDO) and certifying at least one staff member and/or volunteer as a Certified Application Counselor (CAC).
  • Up to 10 of the awarded public libraries will also receive an additional $1,000 in funding to support efforts to increase communication, awareness and education about the upcoming open enrollment period.

Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change (ALA Grant)

Resilient Communities: Libraries Respond to Climate Change, an initiative of the American Library Association (ALA), will help libraries engage their communities in programs and conversations that address the climate crisis.

The pilot program project will fund film screenings, community dialogues and related events based on local interest in 25 public and academic libraries in 2020, and it will fund the creation of a suite of free programming resources about the climate crisis that will be available to all libraries. 

​Public and academic libraries are invited to apply between July 1 and August 28, 2020.
