Door County Reads Festival kicks off January 20, 2024

Door County Library is gearing up for the 17th season of Door County Reads, Door County’s annual collaborative, multifaceted reading and literacy event. This year’s book selection is Braiding Sweetgrass For Young Adults: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the Teaching of Plants, by Robin Wall Kimmerer, adapted by Monique Gray Smith and illustrated by Nicole Neidhardt.

Book distribution began in late November 2023. Door County Reads programming will kick off on January 20, 2024 at 1:00 pm and continue through the majority of February. The featured event is a video presentation along with a live, virtual question and answer session with Robin Wall Kimmerer on February 1st.

Through this programming, the Door County Reads Committee endeavors to provide a platform to amplify indigenous cultural traditions that support the land, plants, people, and water native to Door County and northeastern Wisconsin. The Committee also seeks to build relationships and foster listening, learning, and intergenerational and intercultural understanding in the community.

Because this is a YA (Young Adult) book, for 2024, the Door County Reads Committee is working with Door County’s five school districts and distributed copies of Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults to high school students. Nearly 600 free copies are provided by the Friends of Door County Libraries for public use and over 500 copies were provided to the schools thanks to the Nicolet Federated Library System.

In addition to the annual Door County Reads support provided by the Door County Library Foundation and the Friends of Door County Libraries, for 2024, the Door County Library also received a Wisconsin Humanities major grant to make Door County Reads an especially memorable event.
